“Can a small Kansas City community bank scale into a national sponsor-bank platform for fintechs while running its own direct-to-consumer online bank and mortgage lender?”
nbkc started life in 1999 as Horizon National Bank, a national online mortgage lender out of Kansas. Renamed National Bank of Kansas City (2004) and then nbkc (2015), it broadened from mortgages into consumer online banking and Kansas City commercial banking. Over the last decade nbkc has become one of the more visible small-bank BaaS sponsors, hosting a fintech accelerator (2018) and sponsoring fintech programs with FBO/custodial accounts, debit cards, wallet provisioning, and — via Interchecks (2025) — instant push-to-card payouts. It remains privately owned by Ameri-National Corporation.
