Can a unified API for enterprise data become the default connective tissue between AI agents and every SaaS system they need to read from and act on?

The story

Merge launched in 2020 as a unified API for HRIS/ATS/Accounting/CRM/Ticketing/File Storage, aimed at B2B SaaS companies who wanted to ship customer-facing integrations without building each connector themselves. By 2026 the company has repositioned around AI: the same unified-integration muscle now powers Merge Agent Handler (giving AI agents authenticated tool access) and Merge Gateway (LLM routing and cost control). Merge is not an embedded finance company — it is embedded-finance-adjacent as a data pipe into the accounting / HRIS / financial services stacks its customers build on top of.
