“Can a legacy European universal bank reinvent itself as a digital-first, API-native platform while defending retail and wholesale market share against neobank and fintech challengers across 40+ countries?”
ING originated as a universal European bank and expanded globally through its ING Direct branchless model in the late 1990s. Following the 2008 financial crisis and EU state-aid conditions, ING divested most of its insurance and international direct banking units to refocus on its core European retail and wholesale banking franchise. Over the 2010s, ING repositioned as a digital-first bank, investing heavily in API and platform banking capabilities, and explored embedded finance distribution partnerships (notably its Amazon Germany merchant lending programme), most of which proved difficult to scale at meaningful volume.
