“Can a property management SaaS win by staying out of the money flow — routing rent directly to landlord bank accounts rather than becoming a neobank?”
Hemlane is a vertical SaaS platform for long-term rental property owners and managers, founded in 2015. Rather than becoming a neobank or holding tenant funds, Hemlane made an explicit architectural choice to route 100% of rent directly from tenant to landlord bank account via Stripe Connect — the company never takes custody of funds. Its embedded-finance surface is intentionally thin: rent collection (Stripe), bank verification (Plaid), tenant screening (TransUnion ShareAble), and QuickBooks sync. Recent product investment has been in AI (listing generation, repair triage) and QuickBooks integration rather than in building deeper banking infrastructure.
