The story

Founded in 2009 as a daily fantasy sports platform spun out of the HubDub news startup, FanDuel scaled rapidly through venture funding to become a DFS unicorn by 2015. The 2018 acquisition by Paddy Power Betfair (Flutter Entertainment) was transformational — it reoriented the company from DFS toward full-service online sports betting following PASPA repeal, and FanDuel Sportsbook became the dominant U.S. online sportsbook. The embedded finance angle deepened as FanDuel introduced its own prepaid debit product (Play+) backed by partner banks (Sutton Bank and MVB Bank), enabling frictionless deposits and withdrawals, and began layering insurance-adjacent products like Bet Protect+ directly into the betting experience.
