The story

Founded in 1995 as an online auction platform, eBay grew into one of the world's largest e-commerce marketplaces and used PayPal as its payments backbone for over a decade after its 2002 acquisition. After spinning off PayPal in 2015, eBay strategically recaptured the payments layer by signing Adyen as primary processor in 2018 and fully intermediating payments by 2021 under its Managed Payments brand — turning payments from a cost center into a data and monetization asset. eBay has since layered additional embedded finance products including seller financing (via Liberis and iBusiness Funding), purchase protection insurance (via XCover), and cross-border multi-currency payouts (via Payoneer), building a broader financial services stack on top of its marketplace.
