“Can eBay become the embedded financial OS for the millions of small and mid-market sellers on its marketplace, capturing payments, capital, insurance, and compliance as high-margin services layered on top of its core GMV?”
Founded in 1995 as a consumer auction site, eBay acquired PayPal in 2002 to solve its payment trust problem, making payments an embedded feature. After spinning off PayPal in 2015, eBay spent years rebuilding its own payments infrastructure, culminating in the 2018 Adyen partnership and a full Managed Payments rollout by 2021 — giving eBay direct control of the buyer-seller money flow. eBay has since layered in embedded lending (Seller Capital via Liberis and iBusiness Funding), insurance (Cover Genius, XCover, ShipCover), and tax compliance (Avalara), positioning itself as a financial services layer on top of its core marketplace.
