CMI (Centre Monétique Interbancaire)

Can Morocco's national interbank payment switch evolve from a closed bank-consortium infrastructure into an open platform that powers all electronic payments—POS, e-commerce, mobile, and bill collection—for every merchant, fintech, and public institution in the country?

The story

CMI was established in 2004 as Morocco's national interbank card-payment switch—a bank-consortium infrastructure entity rather than a commercial startup. Over two decades it expanded from pure card acquiring into a full multichannel payments platform (Fatourati), covering POS terminals, e-commerce, mobile wallets, and bill payment for public and private operators. Since 2024 CMI has been accelerating its digital transformation, launching Soft POS (Tap to Mobile), multi-currency DCC with Global Blue, and opening its Fatourati platform to third-party fintechs via aggregator APIs—positioning itself as Morocco's embedded payments infrastructure backbone.
