The story

Founded as a premium Italian coffee concept in London in 1990, Caffè Nero grew organically into Europe's largest independent coffeehouse group under founder/CEO Gerry Ford. The group expanded via acquisitions (Harris + Hoole, Coffee#1, 200 Degrees) and international licensing. Its embedded-finance posture is operational rather than product-led: the pandemic forced a rapid pivot to cashless operations, driving adoption of Equals Money prepaid cards, while global gift-card infrastructure was modernised via Savvy. A 2022 debt refinancing removed mezzanine-debt-based hostile-takeover risk and freed capital for digital channel investment.
