“Can a Kuwaiti Islamic retail bank become the dominant Sharia-compliant digital and embedded-finance platform across the GCC and into the UK?”
Boubyan Bank is Kuwait's leading Islamic retail bank, founded 2004 and majority-owned by NBK. Over the past five years it has pivoted aggressively into digital — launching Nomo (a UK-based Sharia-compliant international digital bank), a Banking-as-a-Service platform for Kuwaiti fintechs, a BNPL product (Deema), and partnerships with Ripple, Microsoft, Spare (open banking), and DIFC FinTech Hive. The strategy is to extend the Islamic-banking franchise from branches into embedded/digital channels across the GCC and the UK.
