Banxy

Can Natixis Algérie capture Algeria's unbanked and underbanked retail population by being the country's only fully digital-native mobile bank?

The story

Banxy was launched in 2018 as the digital banking arm of Natixis Algérie — a traditional French-backed bank established in Algeria since 1999 — to serve retail customers entirely through a mobile app. It represents Natixis Algérie's digital transformation strategy rather than an independent fintech startup. In 2022 the platform added AI-assisted remote onboarding with selfie-video identity verification and e-signature, making it the first bank in Algeria to offer fully online account opening. The product suite is retail-focused (checking accounts, savings, CIB debit cards, Visa cards, foreign-currency accounts, P2P transfers) with no evidence of a B2B or API-embedded finance offering.
