The story

Founded 1997 as a women's health clinic company, athenahealth pivoted into cloud-based practice management and RCM software, eventually becoming a public EHR/RCM leader. After a proxy battle with Elliott, it went private via Veritas Capital in 2019, then was re-sold in 2022 to Bain Capital and Hellman & Friedman in a $17B LBO. Today the company is a vertical SaaS platform whose embedded finance surface is patient payments (card-on-file, stored cards) tied into its RCM product, rather than deposits or lending.
