“Can Apple convert its hardware install base into a vertically integrated consumer financial services platform — increasingly on its own balance sheet?”
Apple Card launched in 2019 as a flagship co-brand with Goldman Sachs to anchor Apple Pay and convert hardware users into financial-services users. Apple expanded the stack with Apple Pay Later (2023) — notably self-financed through Apple Financing LLC, cutting out traditional BNPL partners — and Apple Card Savings (2023). The bet stumbled when Goldman exited consumer; in 2026 Apple announced JPMorgan Chase as the incoming issuer, which is also expected to displace CoreCard as the card processor in favor of Chase's in-house processing.
