“Can a bank-owned benefits-card monopoly reinvent itself as an HR & wellness ecosystem before fintech challengers commoditize the vale-refeição business?”
Founded 2003 as a Banco do Brasil/Bradesco JV to manage Visa Vale prepaid benefit cards, Alelo became the leader of Brazil's meal-voucher market. Following the 2017 PAT reform and the entry of fintech competitors (iFood/Pluxee/Caju), it converted its operating subsidiary into a licensed payment institution (Alelo Instituição de Pagamento S.A.) — acquiring, e-money issuance, and post-paid instrument issuance — and expanded from single-purpose benefit cards into fuel management, corporate expense (Alelo Pagamentos/Despesas), gift/prepaid (Prepax, MoneyCard) and merchant credit. The 2026-announced five-year plan explicitly targets diversification into health, wellness and HR software, aiming for >50% of revenue outside payments by 2030.
