The story

Founded 2008 as a Zappos clone for European shoe shoppers and incubated by Rocket Internet, Zalando IPO'd in 2014 and expanded into a multi-category fashion platform across 25 European markets. The 2017 launch of Zalando Payments GmbH as a BaFin-licensed E-money Institution marked the strategic move from pure retailer to platform — operating its own acquiring, BNPL (invoice and credit), and factoring services in-house. Today Zalando Payments is the embedded financial layer powering checkouts for both the Zalando marketplace and its Connected Retail / Partner Program third-party sellers, with Adyen as the primary external acquiring partner.
