The story

Founded in 2015 in Rwanda by Patrick Muhire and Cedrick Muhiza, VugaPay was built as a cross-platform payment aggregator to bridge mobile money, credit card networks, and Bitcoin across African markets where interoperability between payment rails was limited. The platform targets both businesses and consumers, offering a digital wallet model similar to PayPal but adapted for African mobile-money ecosystems. It expanded to nine countries by end of 2016, processing over 5 million transactions.
