The story

Founded in 1988 as a traditional PEO, TriNet built its business around co-employing SMB workforces and bundling HR, payroll, benefits, and compliance. The 2022 acquisition of Zenefits marked a significant strategic pivot toward capturing the full SaaS/HCM spectrum — from high-touch PEO to low-touch platform — enabling TriNet to serve SMBs at every stage of HR sophistication. More recently, TriNet has moved to embed adjacent financial services (EWA via Clair, 401(k) via Vestwell and Betterment at Work, global EOR via Multiplier) directly into its platform, transitioning from a pure HR outsourcer toward an HR-anchored financial operating system for SMBs.
