“Can a legacy Albanian bank, now under Balfin Group ownership, digitally transform fast enough to triple its customer base and compete with neobanks through a Backbase-powered cloud platform and fully digital product journeys?”
Founded in 1996 as Albania's first private bank, Tirana Bank operated as a subsidiary of Greece's Piraeus Bank for over two decades before being acquired by the Albanian conglomerate Balfin Group in 2018. Under Balfin ownership, the bank embarked on an ambitious digital transformation, signing its largest-ever technology deal with Backbase in 2024 to modernise retail banking and triple its digital customer base. The bank is simultaneously rolling out open banking APIs via Salt Edge's Berlin Group framework and launching fully digital lending journeys, signalling a strategic shift from branch-centric banking toward a cloud-native, app-first model.
