The story

Founded in 2006 as a freemium music streaming service, Spotify expanded from music to become the dominant global audio platform, adding podcasts (via acquisitions of Gimlet and Anchor in 2019) and audiobooks (via Findaway in 2022). The embedded finance angle emerged as Spotify scaled its creator economy: it now operates direct creator payouts, manages subscription billing in 180+ markets with multi-currency FX handling, and relies on Adyen as its global payment processor. Treasury complexity has grown commensurately, with Deutsche Bank and Nordea providing FX and receivables solutions for a platform processing billions in multi-currency subscription revenue.
