The story

Founded in 2014 to solve recurring billing for Shopify merchants, Recharge bootstrapped its way to scale before taking institutional capital in 2020. The company expanded beyond Shopify to support BigCommerce and its own native checkout, building out a multi-processor payment stack (Authorize.Net, Braintree, Stripe, Mollie) and adding tax compliance via Avalara. Its embedded finance posture is primarily infrastructure-facing: it is a subscription SaaS layer that routes payments through third-party processors rather than building proprietary financial products.
