Planet Payment

“Can a payments and software provider owning the hotel POS, PMS, and VAT-refund stack across retail and hospitality become the primary financial infrastructure—and embedded finance distribution channel—for SME merchants in Europe?”

The story

Originally a VAT-refund and multicurrency specialist for tourist-facing retail and hospitality, Planet evolved through acquisitions (including Planet Payment Inc. and Swiss gateway Datatrans) into a full-stack payments and software company targeting retail and hospitality verticals. The company operates its own acquiring and gateway stack—augmented by the Datatrans online payment gateway—and continues to expand its embedded finance footprint by layering third-party products like YouLend working-capital financing on top of its merchant relationships. The strategic bet is that owning the POS, PMS, and payments relationship in hospitality and retail creates a captive distribution channel for adjacent financial products.
