“Can Germany's largest catalogue-turned-marketplace verticalize the checkout — owning payments in-house while orchestrating seller financing through partners?”
Founded 1949 as a German mail-order catalogue business, Otto launched otto.de in 1995 and evolved into Germany's largest online store. In 2018 it announced a fundamental pivot from linear retailer to marketplace platform (OTTO Market), now hosting 6,000+ third-party sellers alongside Otto's own inventory. To support this platform strategy, Otto built its own payments subsidiary OTTO Payments (BaFin-licensed 2022) — bringing invoice, installment and card processing in-house rather than depending on external PSPs. Most recently (2026), it partnered with Banxware to embed seller financing up to €5m, keeping payments in-house while buying lending infrastructure.
