Oportun

Can a mission-driven consumer lender serving the underbanked monetize its proprietary credit underwriting engine as infrastructure — both on its own balance sheet and via a Lending-as-a-Service platform sold to third-party partners?

The story

Founded in 2005 as Progreso Financiero targeting underbanked Latino consumers with small-dollar installment loans, the company rebranded to Oportun in 2015 to broaden its addressable market. After going public in 2019, Oportun expanded its product set — adding credit cards via a WebBank partnership and deposit/debit services — while also building an enterprise-facing Lending-as-a-Service (LaaS) and Embedded Finance platform to monetize its underwriting infrastructure through third-party partners. More recently, the company has focused on balance-sheet restructuring, refinancing via ABS markets, and cost reduction as it navigates a post-growth normalization in consumer lending.
