Can a mid-size NYC commercial bank retrench from BaaS/prepaid and win as a relationship-driven specialty commercial bank while retaining a select, modernized fintech-payments franchise?

The story

Metropolitan Commercial Bank was founded in 1999 as an entrepreneurial NYC community bank and later built a sizeable Global Payments Group offering sponsor-bank / BaaS services for prepaid card programs (a peer to Sutton, Pathward, and The Bancorp). In 2022–2023 MCB publicly exited that fintech-as-a-service prepaid business to refocus on its core commercial franchise — commercial real estate, C&I, and treasury management for law firms, healthcare, EB-5, title & escrow, charter schools and property managers. In parallel, MCB modernized its payments rails with Finzly on top of dual cores (Fiserv + Finxact) to continue serving remaining regulated fintech clients (e.g. Payoneer, Revolut) with wires, ACH, FedNow, virtual accounts and FX.
