Metabank

Can a community-bank-turned-sponsor-bank remain the default U.S. BaaS partner after rebranding from MetaBank to Pathward and the rise of newer charter competitors (Column, Lead Bank, Cross River)?

The story

Founded 1954 as an Iowa community bank, MetaBank evolved over decades into one of the largest sponsor banks in U.S. fintech — issuing prepaid cards, sponsoring BaaS programs (MoneyLion RoarMoney, Spruce, etc.), and providing tax-refund payment products. In 2022 the holding company sold the 'Meta' trademark to Meta Platforms (Facebook) and rebranded as Pathward Financial, with the bank operating as Pathward, N.A. The strategic identity remained the same: a chartered national bank serving as the regulated rails behind consumer fintech brands.
