“Can a Latin American marketplace become the dominant regional neobank by monetizing its merchant and consumer base across payments, credit, yield, and insurance?”
Founded 1999 as Latin America's eBay analog. Built Mercado Pago in 2003 to solve payments for the marketplace, then spun it out as a standalone fintech that now rivals the marketplace in revenue. Mercado Credito (2017+) extended into seller lending and consumer credit; Mercado Pago is positioned as a full digital bank in Brazil, Argentina, and Mexico with yield accounts, cards, and insurance. The company is now effectively two businesses — e-commerce and a regional neobank — with fintech increasingly the growth engine.
