“Can a marketplace-born PSP become the leading digital bank for Chile's SMEs and underbanked consumers?”
Mercado Pago began in 2003 as the payments arm of MercadoLibre, the dominant Latin American e-commerce marketplace. In Chile (entered 2017), it has progressively evolved from a checkout processor into a full-stack neobank — adding a digital account, Mastercard-branded prepaid card, QR/Point acquiring, SME credit (Mercado Crédito), buyer BNPL (Cuotas sin Tarjeta), and a yield product on balances via BICE. The strategic focus is financial inclusion for SMEs and the underbanked in a market still dominated by traditional banks.
