Mama Money

Can a remittance app for African migrants become the full financial-inclusion stack — banking, card, and payroll — for foreign nationals living and working in South Africa?

The story

Founded in 2013 as a low-cost cross-border remittance operator focused on the South Africa–Zimbabwe corridor, Mama Money progressively expanded its payout network to 70+ countries across Africa, Asia, and Europe. In 2024 the company pivoted from a pure remittance app into a broader financial-inclusion platform by launching the Mama Money Card — a WhatsApp-banking-enabled prepaid card account targeting unbanked and underbanked foreign nationals in South Africa. The embedded card and account layer (powered by Paymentology and Access Bank) now positions Mama Money as a multi-product provider covering remittance, banking, and payroll receipt for migrant workers.
