“Can a rideshare marketplace use a closed-loop prepaid wallet and tiered cashback to lock in lifetime rider loyalty the way Starbucks did with coffee?”
Lyft has expanded from pure ridesharing into embedded financial products on both sides of its marketplace. On the driver side, Lyft Direct (built with Payfare and Stride Bank) provides instant payouts, a banking app, debit card, savings and cashback rewards. On the rider side, Lyft Cash Rewards (launched October 2025) turns the rider wallet into a closed-loop prepaid program with auto-refill, using stored value and tiered cashback to drive retention. The strategy mirrors Starbucks' prepaid-loyalty flywheel applied to rideshare.
