“Can a branch-heavy Nigerian microfinance bank digitize group-lending and SME credit fast enough to defend its 6M-customer base against mobile-first neobanks?”
Founded 1987 as a non-profit (Lift Above Poverty Organisation) responding to Nigeria's Structural Adjustment Program. Spun out the microfinance operation as LAPO Microfinance Bank Limited in 2007, obtaining State MFB license in 2010 and National MFB status in 2012. Today one of Nigeria's largest microfinance banks by branch footprint and clients — 500+ branches, 6M+ customers — focused on group-methodology microcredit for low-income households and SME lending, with digital channels (USSD, web loan portals) layered on a traditional branch network.
