“Can a single core-banking + member-app stack become the operating system for the global credit union sector, starting with Kenya's SACCOs?”
Kwara began in 2019 as a core banking SaaS for Kenyan SACCOs (savings and credit cooperatives), replacing legacy on-premise software with a cloud-native, SASRA-compliant platform. After the 2021 seed round, it expanded into a consumer-facing neobank layer — the Kwara App and USSD channel — giving SACCO members instant mobile loans, savings, and CRB credit referencing. The 2023 KUSCCO deal and IRNET acquisition repositioned Kwara from a SaaS vendor into the de-facto digital infrastructure for Kenya's credit union sector, with early expansion into the Philippines and South Africa.
