The story

KCB Group is a 120+ year-old East African commercial bank that has evolved from a traditional Kenyan lender into a pan-African banking group with subsidiaries in seven countries after the 2022 TMB acquisition in the DRC. The group's strategic emphasis is now on digital channels — KCB M-PESA, mobile lending via *520#, the Murong-powered mobile app — and cross-border infrastructure such as PAPSS. The thesis is that East African banking distribution is shifting from branches to mobile rails owned jointly with telcos (notably Safaricom), and KCB is positioning itself as the bank-of-record behind those rails.
