The story

Founded in 1990 as the Amsterdam-based international arm of Turkey's Garanti Bank, GBI initially focused on trade finance and commodity finance for Turkish and global corporates. Over the past decade it broadened into retail banking in the Netherlands and Germany while deepening its European institutional relationships. Following BBVA's full acquisition of Garanti in 2021, the bank rebranded and accelerated technology modernization, selecting Temenos Banking Cloud for its retail operations. GBI now positions itself as a mid-sized European bank bridging BBVA Group's global reach with niche expertise in trade/commodity finance, cash management, and retail deposit products.
