The story

Founded in 2019, Fri started as a multi-bank digital wallet targeting Guatemalan millennials and Gen Z users, enabling P2P money transfers by linking existing bank accounts from affiliated financial institutions. Rather than building a standalone neobank, Fri positioned itself as an interoperability layer on top of Guatemala's existing banking infrastructure. Over time it expanded from pure P2P into merchant payments (QR codes, payment links, POS/mPOS), becoming a PayFac and payment network for Guatemalan SMBs, with a competitive 1.5% MDR. Its model is bank-backed rather than bank-replacing: it operates under contracts with affiliated financial institutions, who remain the custodians of user funds.
