“Can a SIM-resident bank account out-compete wallet-based mobile money (M-Pesa) by offering full banking with telco bundled in?”
Equitel was launched in 2014 by Equity Group Holdings (via Finserve Africa subsidiary) as a thin-SIM MVNO designed to break Safaricom/M-Pesa's stranglehold on Kenyan mobile money by embedding Equity Bank account access directly on the SIM. Originally restricted to Equity Bank customers, it has evolved into a standalone telco+bank product open to any Kenyan with an ID. The thesis is distinct from M-Pesa: instead of a wallet riding on a telco, Equitel is a bank account riding on a SIM, with SIM-Toolkit cryptography pitched as a security moat against internet-based fraud.
