Daviplata

Can Colombia's largest mobile-wallet for the unbanked monetize its 19.5M users by becoming their primary credit provider?

The story

DaviPlata began in 2011 as Banco Davivienda's mobile-wallet experiment to bank the unbanked using only a phone number. It scaled into one of Colombia's largest financial-inclusion platforms (19.5M+ users by 2025). The current pivot is from a transfer-and-wallet rail to a full neobank: nanocredit, debit cards, upcoming credit cards, QR commerce acceptance, and open-finance APIs (API Pago DaviPlata) sold to merchants. The bank rail remains in-house at Davivienda; the strategic question is whether wallet-scale distribution can convert into credit P&L.
