“Can a Visa-owned API infrastructure layer become the default global cross-border payment and multi-currency account plumbing for fintechs and banks worldwide?”
Founded in 2012 as a developer-first API layer for B2B cross-border payments, Currencycloud grew into a platform serving 500+ fintechs and banks across 180 countries with multi-currency wallets, virtual accounts, and FX conversion. Its strategic value as embedded finance infrastructure attracted Visa, which first invested in the 2020 Series E and then acquired the company for $963M in 2021. Post-acquisition, Currencycloud has continued to operate as a distinct Visa subsidiary, expanding its platform (adding Spark, SWIFT payments, and onboarding engine) while leveraging Visa's global network to deepen cross-border payment capabilities for fintech and bank clients.
