Cuckoo Broadband

Can a challenger UK broadband ISP use frictionless payments, AI-driven customer service (Kraken), and bank-app distribution (ApTap) to become the UK's most recommended way to connect, while serving as the retail anchor for Octopus Investments' national full-fibre network rollup?

The story

Founded in 2019 as a challenger broadband ISP targeting the UK residential market, positioning itself alongside Monzo and Octopus Energy as a customer-friendly disruptor. In 2023 it became the first broadband provider to license Kraken (Octopus Energy's AI-driven CX platform), radically cutting cost-to-serve. By 2024, Fern Trading (backed by Octopus Investments) used Cuckoo as the consolidated retail brand for multiple acquired full-fibre networks (Jurassic Fibre, Swish Fibre, Giganet), transforming it from a scrappy startup into the anchor retail ISP for a national full-fibre rollup. The embedded finance angle is lean: payments are outsourced entirely to GoCardless (Direct Debit + open banking), and customer acquisition is increasingly channelled through bank-app marketplaces via ApTap.
