“Can a UK/EU e-money and prepaid card BaaS infrastructure provider survive consolidation and regulatory pressure within a larger European embedded finance group?”
Founded in 2008, Contis built a UK/EU e-money and prepaid card processing infrastructure serving white-label programmes for fintechs including Wirex, Plutus, Ffrees, and Engage. In 2022, German BaaS provider Solarisbank acquired Contis and subsequently rebranded to Solaris, retiring the Contis name and consolidating its EMI licences under the Solaris group to position itself as Europe's leading embedded finance platform. However, regulatory penalties (€840,000 fine by the Bank of Lithuania in 2023 for AML failures) and strategic refocusing led Solaris to discontinue the EMI/Contis business in late 2024, ultimately resulting in Contis Financial Services Limited entering FCA special administration in January 2025 with customer funds frozen.
