The story

Founded in 2012 as a consolidation of multiple French state-backed financing bodies, Bpifrance quickly became the anchor institution for French SME and startup financing, blending direct lending, guarantees, equity investment, and export credit insurance. In 2022 it selected Thought Machine to modernise its core banking infrastructure, signalling a move toward cloud-native ledger architecture to serve SMEs more efficiently. Its digital ambitions extend to open banking research and a retail investment platform (Bpifrance Entreprises), making it one of Europe's most vertically integrated public development banks.
