“Can a bank-owned instant-payments utility defend a domestic market against Visa/Mastercard and global wallets, and then scale that model across Europe via bilateral scheme interoperability?”
Bizum was created in 2016 as a bank-owned utility — a joint venture of the major Spanish banks to build a nationwide mobile P2P payment rail on top of the SEPA Instant Credit Transfer scheme. It has since expanded into e-commerce checkout, in-person NFC payments (Bizum Pay), donations, digital identity and, via the EuroPA alliance, cross-border interoperability with Italy's Bancomat Pay and Portugal's MB Way. Bizum's strategic role is Spain's domestic counterweight to card networks and to global wallets — a bank-owned instant payments scheme rather than a standalone fintech.
