The story

Founded in 2013 as a spot Bitcoin exchange, Bitfinex evolved into one of the world's largest professional crypto trading platforms supporting margin trading, derivatives, OTC, and peer-to-peer margin funding. Following a 2016 security breach, the platform restructured and expanded its product suite to include crypto-collateralized borrowing (Bitfinex Borrow), a utility token (LEO), and eventually a tokenised securities venue (Bitfinex Securities) licensed in Kazakhstan and El Salvador. In 2025, Bitfinex wound down its own crypto payment gateway product (Bitfinex Pay) in favour of a white-label successor (Estable Pay), signalling a shift toward infrastructure and licensing partnerships rather than direct consumer payment product ownership.
