“Can Egypt's century-old state-owned bank become both the dominant BIN sponsor for the country's fintech ecosystem and a credible digital-native bank in its own right?”
Banque Misr is Egypt's second-largest state-owned commercial bank, founded in 1920. Its embedded-finance footprint is twofold: (1) acting as a sponsor bank / BIN sponsor for Egyptian fintechs (Nexta, Souhoola, and others) via partnerships with Mastercard, Visa, e-Finance, and Modupay; and (2) building a standalone digital bank via subsidiary Misr Digital Innovation (MDI). The bank is positioning itself as the principal sponsor-bank rail for Egypt's fintech ecosystem alongside its own digital transformation.
