“A wound-down Brazilian payments institution — the question is no longer strategic but archival: how does a super-app-era wallet unwind its balances through the central bank's SVR framework?”
Launched in 2018 as the digital wallet arm of Lojas Americanas, Ame Digital combined cashback marketing with a prepaid card and P2P transfers to compete with Nubank and PicPay in Brazil's super-app race. Following Americanas' 2023 fraud/accounting scandal and subsequent judicial recovery, Ame was progressively wound down. By late 2025 all payment accounts were closed, and on 30 October 2025 the Banco Central do Brasil formally cancelled its Payment Institution license — ending operations. Residual customer balances are being returned via Banco Central's Sistema de Valores a Receber (SVR) with OCTA SCD SA as the partner processor.
