The story

Founded in 2000 as a pioneering urban car-sharing network, Zipcar grew through organic expansion and the 2007 Flexcar merger to become the dominant US player. The company went public in 2011 but was acquired by Avis Budget Group in 2013 for ~$500M, transitioning from an independent fintech-adjacent mobility startup to a corporate subsidiary. Post-acquisition, Zipcar continued to operate as a standalone brand but embedded finance innovation slowed as it became part of a traditional rental-car conglomerate. The 2016 biometric onboarding addition was a notable identity/KYC modernisation step under the Avis umbrella.
