The story

Founded in 2010 as a pure-play scheduling and time-tracking SaaS for shift-based workplaces, When I Work built its core product around employee scheduling, attendance, and team messaging for SMBs. In 2023, the company made a deliberate move into embedded finance with the acquisition of Lean Financial, signaling ambitions to become a broader financial services platform for hourly workers—not just an operational tool. The first embedded finance product to launch was On-Demand Pay (earned wage access), integrated via Clair and accessible directly within the attendance product, targeting the 82 million hourly US workers who struggle with cash flow between pay periods.
