Can a single open banking infrastructure layer become the wholesale A2A payment backbone for European banks, PSPs, and enterprise merchants?

The story

Token.io launched as an open banking infrastructure provider, processing the UK's first open banking-enabled payment in 2018. It evolved from a pure AISP/PISP connectivity layer into a full A2A payment infrastructure platform offering white-label Pay by Bank products — covering single payments, VRP, payouts, and data enrichment — for banks, PSPs, and merchants across 21 European markets. The company now positions itself as the wholesale infrastructure layer ('TSP') beneath licensed TPPs and large financial institutions such as HSBC, Santander, BNP Paribas, and Global Payments, rather than a consumer-facing product.
