“Can a single API platform become the complete financial operating system — payments, treasury, cards, lending, tax, and compliance — for any company that runs money flows on behalf of third parties?”
Stripe launched in 2010 as a developer-first payments API for individual businesses. In 2012 it introduced Connect, a dedicated product for multi-party money flows — marketplaces, gig platforms, and SaaS companies routing payments to sellers or service providers — recognising that enabling third-party payouts was a distinct, larger opportunity. Over the following decade Connect evolved from a pure payment-routing layer into a full embedded finance stack: adding Treasury (financial accounts with yield), Issuing (card issuance for connected accounts), tax reporting (1099-K automation), and a NetSuite reconciliation connector. The strategic trajectory is 'infrastructure OS for any platform that touches money on behalf of users', moving well beyond payment acceptance into BaaS-style financial primitives.
