The story

Originally launched as a card-reader payment acceptance product for micro-merchants, Square built an expanding suite of merchant software on top of its payments rails. Square Loyalty is one of those software add-ons — a points-and-rewards program that sells as a recurring subscription to Square's installed base of POS merchants. The product's embedded finance angle is tight integration with Square's payment processing, banking (Square Checking), and lending (Square Loans) stack, allowing loyalty data (transaction frequency, spend) to inform credit underwriting and marketing automation. Square Loyalty is not a standalone fintech but a distribution product that deepens merchant lock-in to the broader Block ecosystem.
