Smart Engines

“Can an on-premise, privacy-first AI document scanning SDK become the default identity verification infrastructure layer for regulated financial institutions globally?”

The story

Smart Engines was founded as a research-driven AI company specializing in on-device optical character recognition and document scanning. Rather than becoming a cloud-based KYC SaaS provider, the company differentiated by offering on-premise and mobile-embedded SDKs — processing all data locally on the device or within the client's infrastructure, eliminating data leakage risk. This model attracted regulated financial institutions (banks, fintechs, telcos) seeking GDPR/CCPA-compliant identity verification without sending customer data to third-party servers. The company has since expanded its coverage to 220+ jurisdictions and 3,000+ document types, evolving into a full document intelligence platform that includes anti-fraud, face verification, barcode scanning, and full-page OCR.
